Saturday Night Fever
Saturday Night Fever
If you’re like anyone else that came of age in the 70s, you were greatly influenced by Saturday Night Fever. Maybe you hated it and maybe you didn’t. Maybe you were one of those who wouldn’t admit you liked it due to peer pressure, or some other stupid adolescent reason, but succumbed as an adult with more assertiveness and taste. The classic sound track, dominated by the Bee Gees is now unforgettable, and reminds you just where you were in that time and place. Even if you didn’t like it at the time, you know that there was something about that movie and soundtrack, something that you just couldn’t get out of your head. I had the paperback, and read it insatiably until I could get to the theater to see the real thing. John Travolta was HOT!!! Mmmm. His nice form fitting white dress pants, and effortless error-free moves, I just couldn’t get enough!!!
You remember Saturday Night Fever, John Travolta, Italian-American born, from a working class family, living in with a priest for a brother, disco dancing his heart away to break out of his limited existence as a salesman in his family’s paint store, and for the ultimate attention of the woman he desired. Tony Manero, his friends were less than desirable idiots, just out for one thing, having total disregard for women in general. Polyester and big blow dried hair was the theme, and lots of high heels, for men and women. I remember my neighbor in small town Iowa dressing to the nines in a polyester three piece white suite with a snappy black dress shirt underneath. Oh, and lets not forget the rather large gold necklace gracing the neck, which is what nowadays we would call ‘bling bling’. The Bee Gees were hot and tip top with Saturday Night Fever top hits on the charts such as, ‘Night Fever’, ‘How Deep is Your Love’, ‘You Should be Dancing’, ‘More Than a Woman’, ‘Jive Talkin’, and ‘Stayin’ Alive’. Other popular tunes include the disco standby ‘Disco Inferno’ by the Trammps, ‘If I Can’t Have You’ by Yvonne Elliman, ’Boogie Shoes’ by KC and the Sunshine Band, and ‘A Fifth of Beethoven’ by Walter Murphy, also defined the era and were big hits greatly because of Saturday Night Fever and the disco madness that was sweeping the country.
Whether you loved it or you hated it, or you just can’t admit that you love it, Saturday Night Fever is still one of the most influential movies and soundtracks of our time. I have it on DVD with advanced sound surround effects, for the ultimate disco fever experience, because I just have to have it. I’m sure I’m not the only one!
